This was an exciting collaboration with Helen Draper Mercer, a dynamic and creative Manchester based stylist. We were tasked with designing and creating an installation to display 10 pieces of clothing within a perspex cube for the ‘Wonders of Autumn’ campaign at McArthur Glen, Cheshire Oaks, one of the UK’s leading Designer Outlets. The campaign showcases iconic pieces from the new seasons’ collections. The campaign runs in all six UK McArthur Glen centres until 2nd November.
A variety of McArthur Glen leading brands offered exclusive products to further celebrate the new season. Shoppers can discover the perfect winter coat from Jaeger, the essential black handbag from Osprey, and further ranges from names such as Folli Follie and Lulu Guinness, all exclusive to McArthur Glen centres. These products will accompany the arrival of the Autumn/Winter collections.
We were shadowed by two students from Manchester universities, they were keen to learn more about Visual Merchandising and consumer behaviour. They got stuck in by helping to prepare the garments for the cube.
Drawing upon the textures and colours of Autumn and working within the budget, space and safety restrictions inspired great creativity. We created a tree out of individual tree branches sourced from a local tree surgeon, Caity Rice of Glossopdale Gardens and wrapped the base with moss to create the trunk. The branches of the tree provided an excellent way of hanging garments at height.
Tree stumps created height and proved to be an effective way of displaying folded garments and accessories, these were sourced from, Glossop Firewood and Fuel Suppliers Ltd. The moss worked well to soften the appearance of the tree stumps and make them appear more established and organic. The moss is an effect material to work with as it can be wrapped, draped or scattered. As with the tree they will naturally decay and shed over time adding to the authenticity of the display.
Using the bark chippings we created a forrest feel. The autumn leaves, acorns and ivy helped to bring the whole scene to life by adding some authenticity. The birds, owl and rabbit add a bit of humour and little visual surprises as you get closer and see more detail.
We noticed the impact of the installation immediately, shoppers were passing comments on how nice the products looked asking where they can buy them from. They were genuinely excited to see what was happening.
The cube is an excellent way for the outlet to promote their latest campaigns and catch the shoppers’ eye. They intend to redress it on a regular basis and offer the space to retailers within the center to promote their brands month by month.
